Restaurant, gallery and tea house

Hidden on a back street in KL’s Chinatown, this charming shophouse is a treasure trove of antiques and history. Originally the guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association, it still retains much of its architecture and furnishings, such as wooden latches on doors and two large feng shui mirrors facing each other. To step into Old China Cafe is to take a trip back to early 20th century Chinese community life.

The food is nyonya baba, or Straits Chinese, with some Southeast Asian elements, and there is a Chinese tea house and gallery on the second floor. Classic dishes such as top hats, devil curry and lemak nenas sotong are well-featured, making this an excellent place to get acquainted with this traditional cuisine from Malacca and Penang. In additional, there is live music several times a month on Friday nights.
